How Bluetooth Tethering Works
Bluetooth tethering establishes a Personal Area Network (PAN) between your mobile device and the receiving device. The process involves:
- Pairing: The two devices establish a secure Bluetooth connection using a pairing process that typically involves confirming a PIN or passkey.
- PAN Profile: Once paired, the devices use the Bluetooth PAN profile to create a network connection.
- Data Routing: The mobile device routes internet traffic from the connected device through its cellular data connection.
Advantages of Bluetooth Tethering

Battery Efficiency: Bluetooth tethering uses significantly less power than running a Wi-Fi hotspot. This makes it ideal for situations where battery life is a concern.
Security: Bluetooth has a limited range (typically 30 feet or less) and requires device pairing, making it more difficult for unauthorized users to access your connection compared to Wi-Fi hotspots.
Simplicity: Once devices are paired, reconnecting is usually automatic and doesn't require entering passwords each time.
Disadvantages of Bluetooth Tethering
Slower Speeds: Bluetooth technology has lower bandwidth capabilities than Wi-Fi.
