Ask ten laptop owners what "adding memory" means and most will describe something they did to a desktop. Yet a RAM upgrade is one of the cheapest, most requested laptop services, and it is the part of this objective where a technician can do real damage with a wrong part or a careless hand. This lesson covers the laptop side first, because that is what you will be asked to replace, and finishes with phones and tablets, where the memory is soldered and the job is diagnosis rather than replacement.
Laptops use SODIMMs, and most of them can be replaced
A laptop memory module is a SODIMM (small outline dual in-line memory module). It does the same job as a desktop DIMM but is roughly half the length, roughly 68-70 mm against 133 mm, and it seats flat against the board in a hinged socket rather than standing upright. Everything else about it, capacity, speed, generation, follows the desktop rules you already know.
Generation is the detail that breaks upgrades. Each DDR generation moves the key notch and changes the pin count and voltage, so a module from one generation will not physically fit a socket from another.

The practical rule: the laptop decides the generation, the speed ceiling, and the maximum capacity. You only get to choose within those limits. Before you order anything, pull the model's service manual or specification page and confirm three things: how many SODIMM slots it has (two, one, or none), the maximum total memory and maximum per slot, and the fastest supported speed. A faster module than the platform supports simply runs at the platform's speed; a larger module than it supports may not be recognized at all.
Soldered versus slotted: check before you promise an upgrade
Not every laptop has slots. Thin ultrabooks, 2-in-1s, and most premium models use LPDDR (low-power DDR) chips soldered directly to the system board, exactly as phones and tablets do. Soldered memory saves space, power, and a few millimetres of thickness, and it is not field-replaceable: what the machine shipped with is what it will always have. A middle design is also common, one soldered bank plus one empty SODIMM slot, which lets you add but not replace the base amount.
So the first question for any "can I add RAM?" ticket is not "how much" but "is it slotted at all?" The spec sheet answer is usually phrased as "onboard" or "soldered" versus "1 x SODIMM" or "2 x SODIMM." If it is soldered, the honest recommendation is a device with more memory, not a repair.
Mixing modules and using both channels
Two-slot laptops run in dual-channel mode when both slots are populated, which gives a noticeable boost to integrated graphics. Matched pairs (same capacity, speed, and ideally the same part) are the safe way to get it; mismatched capacities usually still work, but part of the larger module runs single-channel. Never mix generations: a DDR4 module and a DDR5 module cannot share a board, and the notch will stop you from trying.
