PCIEX1 provides a single lane of bidirectional serial data transfer, allowing for a maximum theoretical bandwidth of 250 MB/s in each direction.

How PCIEX1 Works

PCI Express uses a point-to-point serial connection architecture, with each device connected directly to the processor or chipset rather than sharing a common bus. This allows for greater bandwidth, as each device has a dedicated connection.

The 'x1' in PCIEX1 refers to the number of lanes, which determines the maximum bandwidth. PCIEX1 has a single lane, while higher-performance versions like PCIEX4, PCIEX8, and PCIEX16 have 4, 8, and 16 lanes respectively, allowing for greater maximum throughput.

Each PCIEX1 lane uses two differential pairs of wires, one pair for transmit and one for receive, operating at 2.5 GT/s (gigatransfers per second) per lane. The PCI Express protocol includes features like packet-based data transfer, flow control, and error checking to ensure reliable, high-speed communication.

Applications of PCIEX1

PCIEX1 is commonly used for lower-bandwidth expansion cards and peripherals, such as:

  • Sound cards

While PCIEX1 has less bandwidth than higher lane-count versions, it offers several advantages:
