CompTIA A+ 220-1201 vs 220-1202 (Core 1 vs Core 2)

Updated July 2026

CompTIA A+ is split into two exams with confusingly similar codes. Here's what Core 1 (220-1201) and Core 2 (220-1202) each cover, and how they differ.

You need both

To earn the A+ certification you must pass both Core 1 (220-1201) and Core 2 (220-1202). They're separate exams — separate appointments, separate scores — and together they make up the full certification.

Core 1 (220-1201)

The hardware and infrastructure half. Domains cover:

  • Mobile devices
  • Networking
  • Hardware
  • Virtualization & cloud computing
  • Hardware & network troubleshooting

Core 2 (220-1202)

The software, OS, and security half. Domains cover:

  • Operating systems
  • Security
  • Software troubleshooting
  • Operational procedures
Passing scores differ: Core 1 passes at 675/900, Core 2 at 700/900.

Which should you take first?

Most people take Core 1 first, since the hardware and networking fundamentals give useful context for Core 2's operating-system and security material. But CompTIA doesn't require an order — you can sit them in whichever sequence suits your study plan.
