How Many Questions Are on the CompTIA A+ Exam?

Updated July 2026

CompTIA A+ isn't one exam — it's two, and you have to pass both to get certified. Here's exactly how many questions each has, how long you get, and what kinds of questions to expect.

The short answer

Each A+ exam — Core 1 (220-1201) and Core 2 (220-1202) — has a maximum of 90 questions and a 90-minute time limit. That's up to 180 questions total across the two exams.

You must pass BOTH Core 1 and Core 2 to earn the CompTIA A+ certification. They're scored and scheduled separately.

What types of questions?

The A+ exams mix several formats, so it's not all multiple choice:

  • Multiple choice — single-response and multiple-response.
  • Drag-and-drop — matching or ordering items.
  • Performance-based questions (PBQs) — interactive, scenario-driven tasks (e.g. configure a setting, troubleshoot a device). PBQs usually appear first and carry more weight — most people find them the hardest part.

How many do you need to get right?

CompTIA uses a scaled score from 100–900, not a raw percentage. Core 1 passes at 675 and Core 2 passes at 700. Roughly, that's in the low-to-mid 70% range — but because scoring is scaled, focus on mastering the objectives rather than chasing an exact percent.
