What Is 80 PLUS Silver?

80 PLUS Silver is one of the certification levels within the 80 PLUS program, a voluntary efficiency standard for computer power supply units (PSUs). The program was launched in 2004 and is administered by CLEAResult (originally Ecos Consulting) under a contract with electric utilities. The core goal of 80 PLUS is to ensure that a PSU wastes as little electrical energy as possible when converting alternating current (AC) from the wall outlet into the direct current (DC) that a computer's internal components require.

The Silver tier sits in the middle of the certification hierarchy. To earn the 80 PLUS Silver badge, a power supply must achieve at least 85% efficiency at 20% and 100% load, and at least 88% efficiency at 50% load (for 115V internal, non-redundant units). This means that at typical operating conditions, at least 85–88% of the power drawn from the outlet is delivered to the system, while the remainder is lost primarily as heat.
