What is a separation pad?
A separation pad is a small strip of high-friction material, often rubber or cork, mounted opposite the pickup roller in a printer tray, manual feed or automatic document feeder. As the pickup roller pulls the top sheet forward, the pad drags on the sheets underneath and holds them back, so one sheet at a time enters the paper path. Some printers do the same job with a separation roller (also called a retard roller) instead of a flat pad.
Signs a pad is worn
- Multi-feeds: two or more sheets go through together, leaving blank pages in the output or causing jams.
- Jams near the tray: sheets enter at an angle or bunch up at the pickup area.
- Problems from one tray only: each tray and the ADF have their own pad, so a fault that follows one tray points at its pad and roller.
- Visible wear: a shiny, glazed or grooved surface where the paper rubs.
Cleaning and replacing
Paper dust coats the pad and makes it slick. Wipe it with a lint-free cloth dampened with water or the cleaner the manufacturer specifies, and let it dry. Cleaning restores grip for a while, but rubber hardens and wears with age, so a worn pad needs replacing.
Pads and pickup rollers wear as a pair, so replace them together. Many printers sell them as a tray or ADF roller kit, and on many laser printers they're part of the maintenance kit, which may also include the fuser. Follow the kit's page-count interval and reset the maintenance counter after installing it.

Separation pads aren't named in Core 1 (220-1201); the older 220-1101 objectives listed them with laser printer parts. They still matter for objective 3.8 (applying a maintenance kit) and objective 5.6, which covers multipage misfeeds, paper not feeding and paper jams. Several sheets at once points to the separation pad; no sheet at all points to the pickup roller.
