What is fully modular power supply?

A fully modular power supply is a computer PSU in which every power cable—including the main motherboard and CPU connectors—can be detached from the unit, allowing users to connect only the cables their system requires.

What Is a Fully Modular Power Supply?

A fully modular power supply unit (PSU) is a type of computer power supply designed so that all of its output cables can be physically disconnected from the unit's chassis. This includes not only the peripheral and PCIe cables but also the essential 24-pin ATX motherboard connector and the 4/8-pin EPS CPU power connector. Because none of the cables are permanently attached, the builder plugs in only the wires actually needed for a given system configuration.

This design contrasts with two other PSU types:

  • Non-modular PSUs — all cables are hard-wired to the unit and cannot be removed.
  • Semi-modular PSUs — essential cables (24-pin ATX, CPU EPS) are fixed, while optional cables (SATA, PCIe, Molex) are detachable.

Fully modular designs represent the most flexible option and are popular in enthusiast builds, small-form-factor systems, and cases with visible interiors where cable management is important.

Each socket accepts a detachable cable with a matching keyed connector. The cable carries power from the PSU socket to the destination component (motherboard, GPU, drive, etc.). The keying and pin counts differ between socket types to help prevent incorrect connections.

Critical warning: Modular cables are not universally interchangeable between brands or even between different models from the same manufacturer. The PSU-side pinout can differ even when the connectors look identical. Using the wrong modular cable can short components and destroy hardware. Always use the cables that shipped with the specific PSU.

Choose a wattage that comfortably exceeds the system's peak draw, typically leaving 20–30% headroom for efficiency and future upgrades.

Cost

Fully modular units generally cost more than semi-modular or non-modular equivalents of the same wattage and efficiency tier because of the additional connectors and included cable set.
